Assisting in setting the smiles free

Assisting in rehabilitation and rehoming
Once a Staffie-lover, always a Staffie-lover, and boy we can only confirm this statement.
Their big hearts, stinky farts, blind loyalty, funny faces, strange sleeping positions, and endless love is why we adore, rescue, protect, rehabilitate, and support this amazing breed.
Their big smiles and endless love will win over anyone in no time.
Staffordshire Terrier Rescue South Africa was started in 2013 by Megan van Wyngart in Johannesburg. Her love and passion for the breed started with adopting a Staffie and feeling the need to support this mostly misunderstood breed. Over time a network of people assisted all over South Africa and a great organization was built and is still in the process of looking for help and support in all areas of South Africa.
Many posts have been shared and networked by Megan but tragically she had to stop her rescue work for personal reasons. Katja M Herr took over as main lady at Staffie Rescue SA where she runs the Facebook page and the ongoing work to continue helping Staffies in need.
For many years this organization was run with personal funding as donations were few and far between. This could not carry on as personal funding can only go so far, and in 2016 an NPC was formed in order to raise much-needed funds and to support the breed even more. The amount of Staffies in need grows every year and with that also the expenses of running a rescue organization, like any kind of kenneling/housing, veterinary cost, food, travels, etc. the list of expenses is long.
A very strict adoption process was put in place to home this lovely breed. Please read more about it here.
Our main focus is and always will be the Staffie and its needs. It plays a very big role in our homing process and we believe it is the only way to do what we do. A Staffie has such a wonderful nature and is such an innocent loving soul who has no ability to speak for themselves. We are their voice and we read a lot into a dog and their needs. We make sure to find the right home who understands the needs of the dog, their past, and how to move forward with their future. We want to ensure that any family is ready to assist the dog to settle in well in their new home, and give them the tools they need to succeed in their new environment.
We take extra steps and give plenty of guidance to ensure a dog is settling in well. The better the guidance in a dog’s new home the easier the bond will grow and flourish. If you adopt a Staffie or any dog you need to be prepared to be all in, and face any challenges that may come your way. No dog deserves to be let down if some bad manners come up or sneaks in.
Many people make the mistake of “babying” the new family member which can create some issues down the line as the dog feels they are in charge of the house. Some examples of this is resource guarding their owner on walks and getting upset with other dogs or even people when they approach you. Please be firm and give your new fur child the right guidance from the first day in their home so they understand the rules and knows who is in charge.
Don’t be afraid of a NO, any dog needs and loves this word as it gives them a good understanding of what is expected and what is not.
Very important – say what you mean – as a Staffie picks up on your emotions and wiggles you around his little toe in no time! To correct these issues will take you longer than to be firm and give rules from day one. So rather stick to the well-meant suggestions.
Many things need to be taken into consideration when adopting a Staffie as life changes drastically; a Staffie is not a garden ornament, it is a dog with the biggest heart who can only spend 3 to 4 hours alone at a time before they start misbehaving. They will begin to destroy the garden and your furniture due to frustration and loneliness, some of them even start scaling the wall (or jumping right over) to get some attention. This is how many Staffies getting lost or even stolen for dog fights.
Our way forward with the Staffie breed is education and training through positive reinforcement, lots of exercise and stimulation of their brains. Playtime and stimulation games are different and exciting feeding methods which will play a big role in their future happiness. Challenges like hide and seek or tug of war are also great ways to keep your new FurBaby busy and to stimulate their brains.
