We for sure can always need helping hands who are happy to help on a regular basis as at kennels a well safety system is in place to ensure the dogs do not get to each other, that gates are always closed and we ensure only dogs who get along getting walked. If one wants to volunteer it must be for a long time commitment as we don’t have the time to be around teaching people over and over with this huge responsibility.
We are always short of a hands-on volunteer who commits and stay on. We need to have a commitment as we dealing with living dogs and we cannot have unreliable and inconsistent people helping as the dogs need their attention every day. Day in Day out. The same is for volunteers who want to assist with the admin. We have to respond to emails, messages etc every day or soonest we get a chance and this can not take too long. If people show interest in a dog we need to follow our steps if it is a Blue Monday or a Public Holiday, the sooner a Staffie can be homed the better.
So to be a volunteer at a small rescue organisation is of big importance and a commitment what not many people are prepared to put out there sadly. We do understand priorities in people and we don’t blame anybody as it is our commitment and decision to do what we do, nobody forced us to give away our free time, evenings, weekends for this loving breed.
It is our commitment to make a difference and a way to say thank you and give back with the fulfilled life we have.
The saying that you don’t change the world in helping one dog does not make a difference – but for this one dog, you change his world is 100% correct and this is how we feel.
We will always go the extra mile to help, very often for family and friends it is not understood why we give in so much of our precious time. If you go to kennels and see the dog at kennels, knowing their story you will understand why we do this.
Besides the fact that we all working on a volunteer base besides our day to day job is a huge commitment.
We don’t regret it, once a Staffie has been homed and we made a Staffies life better and get the big smiles we have our reward. This feeling to help this specific dog over its issues and help his/her way to their new home is a huge reward and so worth it.
